How to Fire a Bookkeeping Client Without Any Drama
Do you have a bookkeeping client that drives you absolutely nuts? He’s demanding and never gets his information to you on time. Every time you pick up the phone and hear his voice you just cringe. So how do you fire a bookkeeping client?
Unfortunately, the old adage that the “customer is always right” is a major part in being self-employed. If you get angry with the customer and refuse to do any more work for him, you run the risk of damaging your reputation and possibly any future word of mouth advertising. If you originally set-up an Engagement of Services letter then you would simply have to contact the client by letter or email and state that you’re no longer able to provide bookkeeping services for him.
Unfortunately, as we tend to get to know our bookkeeping clients individually better than we would in other professions, this seems rather impersonal. So in order to soften the blow to the client, another option would be to sit down with the client in person and explain that you’re no longer able to do his bookkeeping for him. A “white lie” would not be out of order here so you could simply tell him that you’re simply ”too busy” to complete his bookkeeping properly.
Give him at least a month’s time to find another bookkeeper. Also you could suggest a reliable bookkeeper that he could contact to take over his books. Being self-employed means never having to deal with unreasonable people for any great length of time. But firing your client doesn’t have to be nasty.
