Five Personality Traits You’ll Need in Your Home Based Bookkeeping Business
Do you find yourself wondering if you have what it takes to run a home based bookkeeping business? Not everyone is able to work on their own and make a go of it. So, here are five personality traits you must have before you start your home based bookkeeping business.
1. You Should Have Self-Motivation:
If you are the kind of person who needs to be told what to do, you’ll find running a home based business very challenging.
Being self-motivated means that you get up every morning and go to your office just the same way you did when you were an employee. Routines can help you a great deal here, such as getting up at the same time; going into your office and turning on the lights, computer and radio; even getting yourself ready as if you’re going out can all put you in the right frame of mind to begin work for the day.
2. You Need to be Organized:
With all the paperwork you’ll be handling for your clients, being organized is critical to your business. So if you find that paperwork gets scattered all over your desk or if you find yourself misplacing things a lot, you’ll definitely have to improve in this area.
Client paperwork obviously can never get mixed together so proper handling and filing of each client’s information cannot be overstated. Keep your desk clear and only have one set of client files out at a time. When you’re done with them, file them away immediately.
3. You Have to be Able to Schedule and Plan:
As a bookkeeper, you’re aware of the importance of deadlines. Clients depend on you to know exactly when a remittance payment is due. If you don’t keep track of these important dates, you will lose your clients.
A Day-Timer is a great tool for scheduling and planning out your work week. Always write down an upcoming deadline the moment you’re aware of them. It’s too easy to forget when you’re dealing with a lot of clients.
4. You Have to be Persistent:
Building a home based bookkeeping business doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not a “get rick quick” business. So you have to have patience and persistence to build your business slowly. Some months you may not pick up any new clients and others you may get more than you can handle at once.
The important thing is to never give up. If one method of promoting your business isn’t working, try something different. Keep your eye on the prize.
5. You Have to be Able to Promote Yourself:
You can’t be shy about letting people know about your bookkeeping business. Don’t be afraid to talk to everybody you come in contact with and let them know about your services.
If you don’t want to ask somebody directly if they need a bookkeeper, ask them if they know anyone who needs a bookkeeper (this takes the pressure off putting the person on the spot). Word of mouth is key to this business, so you have to be able to put yourself out there.
Many people are not necessarily born with these five personality traits. But they are skills that can be learned if you have the determination and drive to succeed in your home based bookkeeping business.
